Book of the Week: Stellaluna by Janell Cannon

Updated: Apr 7, 2022

This weeks most loved book is the classic Stellaluna. Though not a traditional Halloween story, bats are a favorite Halloween creature that sometimes gets a bad rap. Stellaluna tells the story of a young fruit bat who gets separated from her mamma after an attack by an owl. She falls into a nest of baby birds who accept her as one of their own. Stellaluna struggles to fit in trying to be just like the birds. She sleeps at night, eats bugs and never hangs by her feet. However as happy as she is with her new friends Stellaluna never forgets her bat family or her bat ways.

Some great themes to discuss in this story are friendship, overlooking differences, and finding connections.
