A Fun Filled February

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

Happy Lunar New Year Pilgrim readers. February is a busy busy month in the library. Firstly we have a High School Book Club!! I'm so excited to get reading with my HS Book Club. The winning choice was 'They Both Die at the End' by Adam Silvera. Our first meeting will be next Monday, February 7th in Hoover Gardens. Secondly we are celebrating Black History Month in a big way. Students are reading poetry of the Harlem Renaissance and creating their own response poems. We began by reading 'I Too' by Langston Hughes. After analyzing the poem students were asked to create their own response poem in the Eintou format. Eintou is a African American form of poetry that follows a structure, similar to a haiku. The structure is as follows: 2-4-6-8-6-4-2. The structure itself has meaning in African culture in that it is believed that everything, including our lives, runs in a cycle and always comes back to the beginning. In this way each poem always begins with 2 syllables, grows and then returns to 2 syllables. I've been so impressed with some of the poetry that students have written so far. I will post some of them here in our next post. Finally Valentine's day is also a fun day in the library as we will be reading about the origins of the holiday and reading some fun themed stories as well. Though February is a short month it will be action packed. Check back soon!!
