Continuing our love of Black History Month last week students read 2 wonderful titles featuring African American characters. Our lower elementary enjoyed Remember to Dream Ebere by Cynthia Erivo which tells the story of a mother and child and the dreams they share. Ebere has wonderful dreams and wakes up to tell her mother the details. When her mom asks probing questions that Ebere doesn't know the answer to her mom convinces her to go back and dream some more. Ebere's dreams are big and her mother encourages her to dream even bigger. Some wonderful themes to discuss with this title is hope, perseverance and being open to possibilities. Our upper elementary read Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena. Last stop... tells the story of a young boy and his grandmother taking a bus trip through a bustling and busy city. The boy, CJ, makes observations on the way and laments about all the things he doesn't have. He is met with encouraging words by his grandmother who sees the beauty where CJ cannot find it. We talked a lot about gratefulness and seeing the jar as half full. I can't believe we are already halfway through February. Stay tuned for exciting book fair news in the next few posts.
