Having a spoooooktacular day in the Library!

Updated: Nov 2, 2022

Good morning ghouls and goblins and so many Harry Potters. We have been having a great week in the library reading spooky stories while plotting out our own. Here are just a couple of the books we checked out this week. Lower elementary read I Love my Fangs by Kelly Leigh Miller and Herbert's first Halloween by Cynthia Rylant. I Love my Fangs tells the story of a young Dracula who loses his fang and becomes very upset when the tooth fairy comes to get it. Many friends related to this timely event and showed off their own missing teeth. Students loved seeing him chase the tooth fairy around and tried to explain to him that once you lose a fang you will get back an even better, stronger one later on. Herbert's First Halloween tells the story of a little pig who is scared of his first Halloween. His dad tells him that he does not have to wear a scary costume but can be anything he wanted. Herbert decides to be brave and go trick or treating. Some themes we discussed were facing our fears and it being OK to ask for help.

Our upper elementary also read some spooky stories but spent time dissecting the problem and the solution of each story. Our 3rd through 5th graders read A Teeny Tiny Halloween by Lauren Wohl and The Good, The Bad, and The Spooky by Jory John. We have already created our writing groups and have chosen the main characters of our picture books. This week they worked on figuring out the theme/lesson of their stories and began plotting out the problem the main character will face and some possible solutions to the problem. There is so much excitement around this project and I can't wait to get to the actual writing part of the project. I am so proud of how invested they are in it; and they cannot wait to share it with all of you.

Looking ahead please keep in mind that the book fair is 11/14 to 11/18 in Amanda Scott room. We will also be having an author visit on December 6th. More details to follow. Have a spooktacular Halloween everyone!!
